Huge Tyrrell County fire now 45% contained

TYRRELL COUNTY, N.C. (WITN) – State foresters say they are making headway on containing that huge fire burning in Tyrrell County.

The Last Resort Fire is now 45% contained, foresters said Monday afternoon. The fire remains at 5,200 acres and the state says it was caused by a debris burn that jumped containment lines.

The North Carolina Forest Service said significant rainfall Sunday evening into Monday morning helped their efforts.

Foresters say places east of the fire in Columbia and Dare County can expect smoke overnight while areas south, like Belhaven and Pantego, can expect smoke impacts early Tuesday.

The state says road closures may be implemented Tuesday morning if needed.

There are no injuries and no structures threatened at this time.
