EMERALD ISLE, N.C. (WITN) – Those who work outdoors in the summer, whether it’s on construction sites or in lifeguard chairs, understand the dangers of being outside during heat advisories.
Emerald Isle lifeguard Reid Taylor says he and other lifeguards usually prepare by starting the night before.
“We drink a lot of water constantly. Get a good meal in and a good night’s rest…that’s huge,” says Taylor.
Taylor also mentions that during their shifts, they usually find other ways to stay cool, such as utilizing the air conditioner in their work vehicles while patrolling.
When the heat index is high along the Crystal Coast, Taylor says he drinks a lot of water.
“Just water. I may have an energy drink like mid-day or so, but water, and also the liquid IV packets, stuff like that helps a lot because we’re sweating so much throughout the day,” says Taylor.
Beachgoers enjoying the warm weather are cautious when the temperatures rise. A runner advises knowing your limit and taking breaks.
“You do have to acclimate. You can’t just go out. You will overheat yourself. So I think you just have to know your limits and go inside when you’re too hot, drink a lot of water, and try to stay in the shade sometimes too,” says Penny Andrew.
Taylor stressed the importance of sun protection for lifeguards and urged beachgoers to use sunscreen. He also mentioned that he and other lifeguards wear UV-protected sun shirts for extra protection.
Taylor says the best way he cools off and also helps him figure out what to look out for while on duty is by dipping in the ocean so he can also monitor the conditions.
