HIGHWAY PATROL: U.S. 264 three-car collision leaves one dead

BEAUFORT COUNTY, N.C. (WITN) – The North Carolina State Highway Patrol says a man is dead after rear-ending a car and hitting another car head-on Wednesday evening.

Highway Patrol says Elmer Squires was driving on Highway 264 yesterday in Beaufort County around 6:15 p.m. when he rear-ended a car. After rear-ending the first car, the 46-year-old Washington man crossed the centerline and hit a 2022 GMC SUV head-on, and overturned, according to officials.

The Highway Patrol says there weren’t passengers in any of the three cars.

WITN is told Squires died from his injuries after being taken to ECU Health Medical Center in Greenville.

The other two drivers were taken to ECU Health Beaufort Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The Highway Patrol says no one is facing charges.
