HIGHWAY PATROL: Driver airlifted after car found on fire in Wayne Co.

WAYNE COUNTY, N.C. (WITN) – The North Carolina Highway Patrol says a driver was airlifted to Chapel early Wednesday morning after the car was found in a ditch on fire.

According to highway patrol, troopers found a car on fire in a ditch near the intersection of Northeast Church Road and Old Mount Olive Highway after getting a call at 3:26 a.m.

The Mount Olive Fire Department, one of multiple emergency crews called to the accident, says firefighters worked quickly to put out the fire after crews there told them the driver was still inside the car on fire.

Once the patient was removed, according to the Mount Olive Fire Department, he was taken to ECU Health EastCare and then flown to the University of North Carolina Medical Center in Chapel Hill.

Along with MOFD and Highway Patrol, Dudley Fire Department and Wayne County Emergency Services helped free the driver.

WITN is working to get more information.
