DARE COUNTY, N.C. (WITN) – The main road on the Outer Banks is open to traffic once again.
The Department of Transportation says Highway 12 from the Marc Basnight Bridge to Rodanthe was shut down for several days due to the impacts of a storm system along the coast.
Ocean water destroyed the dunes during high tide Sunday morning and sent water rushing over the highway, forcing the roads to close to traffic.
The DOT said crews pushed sand off the highway both Monday and Tuesday to the point that the highway could reopen.
Traffic resumed on the busy route at 1:00 p.m.
Drivers are asked to still use caution in the area because some sand and standing water remains on the highway.
