Highway 12 remains open on the Outer Banks

The Department of Transportation says there are parts of Highway 12 in Dare County with rainwater up to a few inches deep.

DARE COUNTY, N.C. (WITN) – The main road on the Outer Banks remains open as Tropical Storm Debby comes knocking.

The Department of Transportation says there are parts of Highway 12 in Dare County with rainwater up to a few inches deep thanks to downpours, but so far no ocean overwash.

The National Weather Service says the Outer Banks could get up to three inches of rain from Debby.

The D.O.T. says their crews spent the day shoring up the dune line just north of Hatteras and clearing debris out of drainage ditched.

They also have equipment staged in several hot spots along the highway in case overwashes happen during high tide.
