Highway 12 on Ocracoke reopens

HYDE COUNTY, N.C. (WITN) – The North Carolina Department of Transportation has reopened Highway 12 north of Ocracoke.

DOT says all lanes on the highway were closed earlier between the National Park Service Pony Pens and the Ferry Terminal due to ocean overwash and unsafe driving conditions.

Officials say ferry service between Hatteras and Ocracoke was suspended.

The highway reopened to all traffic at 5:00 p.m.

About two weeks ago the same stretch of highway was shut down for nearly a week due to ocean overwash.
