Highway 12 & ferry on Ocracoke closed until Saturday

OCRACOKE ISLAND, N.C. (WITN) – A coastal highway that’s been closed since Saturday will remain shut down for the rest of the week.

The Department of Transportation now says Highway 12 on Ocracoke Island will stay closed until at least noon on Saturday.

This past weekend’s stormy weather closed the highway from the National Park Service Pony Pens to the ferry terminal at the north end of the island. Sand and overwash on the road continue to be a problem, according to the Department of Transportation.

The DOT says the low pressure system continues to cause deep water and hazardous driving conditions on the highway.

Ferry service between Ocracoke Island and Hatteras Island has also been impacted by the road closure.

Ocracoke is still accessible via the ferry system’s Pamlico Sound routes:

  • Ocracoke to Swan Quarter: 7 a.m. and 1:30 p.m.
  • Swan Quarter to Ocracoke: 10 a.m. and 4:30 p.m.
  • Ocracoke to Cedar Island: 7:30 a.m. and 1 p.m.
  • Cedar Island to Ocracoke: 10:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m.
