Highway 12 & ferries on Ocracoke closed at least until 4 p.m.

OCRACOKE ISLAND, N.C. (WITN) – A coastal highway that’s been closed since Saturday will remain shut down for most of today.

The Department of Transportation now says Highway 12 on Ocracoke Island could reopen at 4:00 p.m.

This past weekend’s stormy weather closed the highway from the National Park Service Pony Pens to the ferry terminal at the north end of the island. Sand and overwash on the road continue to be a problem, according to the Department of Transportation.

Ferry service between Ocracoke Island and Hatteras Island has also been impacted by the road closure.
