High-speed Wayne County chase ends in La Grange with crash

LA GRANGE, N.C. (WITN) – A high-speed chase that started in Wayne County ended in La Grange with both the trooper and the other vehicle crashing.

The crash happened around 3:30 p.m. on Herring Road near Frink Middle School. The trooper’s cruiser ended up in a yard of La Grange Village Apartments.

The Highway Patrol says it started on U.S. 70 when the trooper saw the vehicle driving recklessly and speeding up to 130 miles per hour.

The car passed the trooper, who was in an unmarked cruiser, and that’s when the chase began, according to Sgt. M.A. Peaden.

Sgt. Peaden says once in La Grange, the trooper used a PIT maneuver technique to end the chase.

Lenoir County deputies say after the crash, the driver ran. Several agencies set up a perimeter near the school and the person was taken into custody.

Sgt. Peaden says Lenoir County deputies found drugs in the man’s car.

Neither the trooper nor the driver were injured and Peaden says charges are pending.
