High school band teacher resigns after student sex charges

HERTFORD COUNTY, N.C. (WITN) – An Eastern Carolina band instructor has resigned after being arrested on student sex charges.

Travis Gatling, a teacher at Hertford County High School, has been charged with felony indecent liberties with a student and contributing to the delinquency of a juvenile. He was arrested by Hertford County deputies on Saturday at his Winton home and posted a $15,000 secured bond.

Sheriff Dexter Hayes says their investigation revealed explicit photos and messages were sent between the victim and the 28-year-old Gatling. A warrant says the contributing charge stemmed from Gatling causing and encouraging the student to access pornography.

Parental concerns alerted the school and deputies, according to the school system.

In a statement, Hertford County Schools said it was “deeply disturbed to learn of the charges filed against one of our teachers.”

It says officials at the high school were made aware of the allegations on January 8th and contacted the sheriff’s office. Gatling was immediately suspended.

The school system says Gatling, who had been employed most recently since 2018, then resigned on Sunday.
