Heavy rain leads to flooded streets in Pitt and Lenoir Counties

The Grifton fire department says there were no calls for assistance related to the storm.

GREENVILLE, N.C. (WITN) – Tropical Storm Debby impacted the town of Grifton over night pouring heavy rain across North Carolina on Wednesday night and Thursday morning.

Elizabeth Christian said she was awakened in her sleep by multiple emergency notifications on her phone.

“We got up and we went outside and our backyard was completely flooded because it comes down from the hill behind our house and our koi pond was all flooded it was a mud pit,” says Christian. “It was just like a river going through my back yard.”

The tropical weather system flooded streets and caused several homes to be surrounded by water.

Tommy Sugg says he’s thankful he and his wife were not impacted.

“Well, just off and on rain showers, I didn’t see or hear any wind to speak of and it didn’t rain,” says Suggs. “It rained hard at times but just in bands but we get a lot of breaks in between.”

According to the National Weather Service, it is never safe to drive or walk into floodwaters.

They say just 12 inches of rushing water can carry away most cars, while six inches of water can reach the bottom of most passenger cars and cause loss of control.

Just two feet of rushing water can carry away most SUVs and trucks.

Christian says she hopes the water doesn’t drain into her yard.

“I’m worried about the rest of today at least because this is like I said it’s gotten full before but it hasn’t actually gone over the bridge over here and it hasn’t gotten up so high,” says Christian. “This is the highest that it’s been.”

The Grifton Fire Department said they did not get any calls for assistance related to the storm.
