Greenville police make arrest in 2022 unsolved murder

GREENVILLE, N.C. (WITN) – Police say they’ve made an arrest in an unsolved murder in Greenville from more than two years ago.

Greenville Police says David Tarrant was arrested Wednesday morning and charged with the murder of 36-year-old William Rushing.

Back on March 24, 2022, police say officers responded to an “assist EMS” call in the 3900 block of West Vancroft Circle in Greenville.

The area is near Honor Ridge, an affordable housing complex for veterans.

Police say Rushing’s body was found in a grassy area between two buildings.

While police say there were obvious signs of trauma on the man’s body, a cause of death was not immediately known.

An autopsy by the Pitt County Medical Examiner’s Office found that Rushing died from blunt force trauma.

Police say they had very few leads in the investigation at the start, but recently received information leading to a break in the case.

Tarrant was identified as the primary suspect in the case.

The 24-year-old Ayden man is charged with murder and is being held in the Pitt County Detention Center under no bond.
