Greenville man admits to killing wife in 2022

GREENVILLE, N.C. (WITN) – A Greenville man has admitted to killing his wife just over two years ago.

Demetrius Cooper pleaded guilty this morning in Pitt County Superior Court to second-degree murder for the shooting of his wife, Amy.

The shooting took place on January 8, 2022 at the couple’s home on Williamsbrook Lane.

The Pitt County District Attorney’s Office said the couple had been married for less than a year, and said the husband would get drunk and become violent.

Prosecutors say the wife called police in November of 2021, saying she woke up with her husband’s hands around her throat. The woman told police she was worried for her safety and that the violence was escalating. A few days later the woman left with her teenage son and moved in with family members.

The D.A.’s office says two months later, the woman returned to get some personal items and to tell her husband she wanted a divorce. They say the victim was shot four times in the entryway of their home, with the husband calling 911 and saying he had killed his wife.

A judge sentenced the 42-year-old Cooper to state prison for between 24 and 30 years.
