Greenville looks to increase sports tourism by potentially building brand new sports complex

GREENVILLE, N.C. (WITN) -Greenville could soon be home to a brand-new sports complex that would help increase sports tourism in the city.

The city council has expressed interest in potentially adding a sports complex, with hopes of increasing tourism and recreational offerings.

Victus Advisors presented the council with phase one of a sports complex feasibility study Monday.

The study showed Greenville’s strengths and opportunities that make the city intriguing, but there’s concern about the lack of available facilities to increase sports tourism.

“What kind of facility do we need to build?” said Andrew Schmidt, Visit Greenville President & CEO. “How big does it need to be? Where should it go? Can it accommodate all the different sports that we’re trying to bring to Greenville and Pitt County? We’ve got a lot of work to do, but the fact that we’re having conversations is encouraging for us.”

The next phase of the study will be to look at a financial and economic analysis for the sports complex, which will be completed sometime this month.
