Greenville exploring program to fine those who leave out roll-out carts

A new program in Greenville would fine people who leave the roll-out carts on the street for an extended period of time.

GREENVILLE, N.C. (WITN) – Monday mornings might start with rolling out the rollout carts for many Greenville residents. However, problems arise when some remain there for days and sometimes, stay there all year long.

For Dennis Skorewicz and his wife, it has become a primary concern when they are visiting their family and planning to move to Greenville in a year.

“Most people, as I drive around, I noticed, do not store them in their backyards or driveways. they leave them out on the street until the next collection date,” Skorewicz shared.

According to city councilwoman Marion Blackburn, getting the roll-out carts off the streets is important now more than ever with tropical storm Debby on the way.

“Carts get knocked over and everything in them gets knocked over and all of that goes into the tar river, so we’ve got an immediate trash issue,” Blackburn explained.

Blackburn says carts remaining on the street can also be a road hazard. Another issue arises with an influx of students and traffic around this time.

“Especially with move-in and move out there’s already so many items on the street just the additional trash from moving in,” Blackburn added.

A new program the city is looking at would fine people who leave the roll-out carts on the street for an extended period of time.

Skorewicz says team effort is needed for the city.

“Let’s not leave it all up to the government, let’s, as responsible citizens, focus on keeping the community clean and beautiful and a desirable place to live,” Skorewicz said.
