GREENE COUNTY, N.C. (WITN) – Parts of eastern Carolina are still feeling the impacts of the heavy rains since Debby’s landfall Thursday, including Greene County.
A part of Speights Bridge Road that runs across Contentnea Creek is shut down because the roadway is underwater, but residents are not surprised to see the area flooded.
“It’s not as bad as we’ve seen before, we’ve seen it during several hurricanes where it would flood, so it’s nothing new to us to see this,” said resident Fred Newcomb.
According to Greene County Emergency Management, two roads had to be closed due to high waters flooding the streets, including Speights Bridge Rd. and Gurganus Rd., which have been closed since Debby’s landfall in eastern Carolina Thursday. Gurganus Rd. has cleared off, but residents say they don’t even try going down the road when they know a storm is coming.
“I didn’t personally go down there myself, but I know my parents have, and they told me it did get pretty bad,” said resident Miguel Reyes. “I never even bothered going down there, but it does get pretty bad flooding there.”
Greene County officials say the water levels in the northern area of the county are receding. The National Weather Service forecasts Contentnea Creek to crest at a moderate flood stage. As of Monday, the creek rose to 20 feet but is expected to recede over the next few days. Residents aren’t too worried about the water getting to their homes since the road is at an incline.
“No, it might come up to the bridge, it might get over to the railings of the bridge, but that’s it since the land gets higher,” said Newcomb.
The National Weather Service has issued a flood warning until further notice for Greene, Pitt and Lenoir counties as the water levels in Contentnea Creek crest.
