GREENE COUNTY, N.C. (WITN) – A tornado went through Greene County early Thursday morning as Tropical Storm Debby moved through. The tornado hit several homes and farms, causing significant damage and destroying one mobile home.
As Tropical Storm Debby made itself known in eastern Carolina, Greene County Emergency Management responded to calls of damage around 2:30 a.m. Thursday for a suspected tornado.
Four properties were badly hit, and one mobile home off Highway 58 North was devastated by the heavy winds and rainfall. Two farms were also hit. No one was injured, but residents say these close calls have them on edge.
“It literally came right by our house, a big tree snapped and fell in the yard,” said resident Nichole Jackson. “We stay in a mobile home, so we had to get that ready, and it just missed the house, went straight by.”
A tornado warning was issued for Greene County around 2 a.m., and officials say the destruction likely happened just twenty minutes later. Residents say it’s a reminder of past storms that have hit Greene County.
“No wind damage, we were fortunate there, but in ‘84, I experienced a tornado and lost my home,” said resident Russ Jones, “it’s just a serious situation.”
People in Greene County are now bracing for what’s left of Debby and encourage everyone to protect themselves.
“It’s better safe than sorry, so I definitely say stay at home,” said Jackson.
Line workers were also out in Greene County throughout the day Thursday making repairs to power lines that fell during the storm.
