NORTH TOPSAIL BEACH, N.C. (WITN) – Police have confirmed a 14-year-old was bitten by a shark this weekend at North Topsail Beach.

Chief William Younginer says it happened around 12:30 p.m. Sunday at beach access number 4.

First responders were already at the beach because of a report of someone else unconscious.

As they were wrapping up with the original call, Younginer says they learned someone had been bitten by a shark.

People at the beach were trying to help by putting pressure on the wound and wrapping it with towels.

The victim was taken to Naval Medical Center Camp Lejeune, and Younginer says he’s expected to be okay.
