Gov. Cooper warns of river impacts, other problems caused by Debby

Multiple shelters are still open serving people following the storm.

RALEIGH, N.C. (WITN) – Gov. Roy Cooper held a press conference this morning to provide an update on the effects of former Tropical Storm Debby across North Carolina.

“Multiple river gauges are at major flood stage and additional flooding could occur this weekend or early next week,” Gov. Cooper says, “And over the next several days, likely afternoon showers will increase the threat of additional flash flooding, especially across eastern North Carolina.”

Emergency Management Director Will Ray says 9 shelters remain open with approximately 56 people using them as of overnight. If you are asked to evacuate, visit your county government website or readync.gov for more information.

Transportation Secretary Joey Hopkins says we peaked with about 290 road closures 8:30 last night. As of this morning, 205 roads were closed among 10 primary routes with the main closures being in Robeson, Chatham, and Sampson Counties.
