Gen. Al Gray, retired Marine Corps commandant, dead at 95

WASHINGTON, D.C. (WITN) – A retired Marine Corps commandant, with strong ties to Camp Lejeune, has passed away.

Gen. Al Gray died this morning, according to the Marine Corps.

The 95-year-old Gray was the 29th commandant from 1987 to 1991.

Before leading the Marine Corps, Gray was commanding general at the 2d Marine Division and II Marine Expedition Force, both headquartered at Camp Lejeune.

Gray coined the term “every Marine a rifleman”.

The retired general was a supporter of the Carolina Museum of the Marine,
