Fund set up for man killed by woman troopers say was high on marijuana

DUPLIN COUNTY, N.C. (WITN) – The family of a man killed by a woman troopers said was high on marijuana has set up a funeral fund drive.

Mildo Velasquez, of Willard, was heading east on I-40 in Duplin County Sunday night and pulling a small utility trailer with a truck. Troopers say the trailer came off the hitch with only the safety chains holding it on.

Velasquez stopped on the interstate, according to the Highway Patrol, as did another driver who was a family member.

While attempting a repair, troopers say a third vehicle didn’t slow down and struck the car. The car then hit the trailer, causing it to jackknife and hit Velasquez, who died at the scene.

Two children inside Velasquez’s truck were not injured.

Troopers suspect Raylee Greico, of Raleigh, was impaired by marijuana. The 19-year-old has been charged with DWI, underage DWI, and failure to reduce speed.

A GoFundMe site says Velasquez left behind two children and a wife. It is trying to raise $8,000 to help with funeral expenses.
