Free Medicaid-enrollment event in Greenville on Wednesday

GREENVILLE, N.C. (WITN) -People in one Eastern Carolina city who cannot afford healthcare will get the chance to enroll in Medicaid.

The Craver Branch Library on West 14th Avenue will be holding a free event for low-income residents.

Access East’s HealthAssist Uninsured Network says the event will provide free expert assistance while enrolling for the North Carolina Medicaid health coverage program.

It will be from 1-5 p.m. Wednesday.

Since North Carolina passed the Medicaid Expansion program on December 1st, it has allowed many that come from low incomes now qualify to enroll.

Already 450,000 North Carolinians have been able to sign up since the expansion program, with 1,000 people joining daily, according to state numbers.

“With the high number of uninsured that we have in eastern North Carolina, getting more people enrolled helps greatly in improving their health outcomes,” noted Shantell Cheek, director of Access East Uninsured Programs.

More than 200,000 North Carolinians between the ages of 19- 64 are eligible to enroll.

Access East says appointments are available to guarantee being seen, though walk-ins are welcome. Call (252) 847-3027 to schedule an appointment.
