Former Onslow County EMS division head charged with child sex crimes

ONSLOW COUNTY, N.C. (WITN) – A former EMS division head for one Eastern Carolina county is facing multiple child sex charges.

Robert Barefoot, who goes by his middle name of West, has been charged by the SBI with four counts of indecent liberties with a child, two counts of misdemeanor sexual battery, and two counts of domestic violence protective order violation.

Warrants say the crimes happened between March 1, 2021, and March 2 of this year and involved two girls under the age of 16. The warrants were issued on Friday against the man who lives in the Holly Ridge area.

Barefoot was hired last July as Onslow County EMS division head. A post on the county’s website, which has since been removed, said Barefoot brought 21 years of experience in emergency medical services to the county. He previously worked in Harnett County as their assistant chief of training.

Onslow County says Barefoot resigned from his $101,162,71-a-year job on April 18th.

The SBI says they were contacted by the Onslow County Sheriff’s Office on March 7th to investigate the allegations since Barefoot was a county employee. He turned himself in at the jail on Friday and was given a $40,000 secured bond by a magistrate.
