Fire damages popular downtown New Bern restaurant

NEW BERN, N.C. (WITN) – A popular downtown New Bern restaurant was damaged by fire Thursday night.

New Bern Fire-Rescue was called to the Chelsea Restaurant on Middle Street just before 9:00 p.m. The building’s sprinkler system contained the fire until fire crews arrived on the scene.

Two main streets, Broad Street and Middle Street, had to be shut down because of emergency response crews.

The city says the cause of the fire was unintentional and there were no injuries to restaurant staff or fire crews.

There’s no word on whether the Chelsea will be able to open today, but the fire department says there was significant water damage to the building.
