FAMILY: Toddler and great-grandmother killed in Rocky Mount were gathered for memorial service

ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. (WITN) – Rocky Mount police are investigating the deaths of a woman and a toddler after a fatal car accident that happened Tuesday night.

Rocky Mount police say that they were called to the scene of a fatal car accident in the 600 block of Kingston Avenue, east of West Raleigh Road between Powell Drive and Jasper Street just after 4 p.m. on Tuesday.

According to police, a 56-year-old woman traveling westbound on Kingston Avenue struck two people with her car.

Police say that 60-year-old Barbara Jean Grant and her two-year-old great-grandchild died at the scene from their injuries.

WRAL spoke to the family who told them that the family had gathered for the memorial of another family member who had died earlier this month.

The family said that the child ran into the street and Grant ran into the street after them.

The driver of the car was not injured, police did not say what charges, if any, the driver would face,

Kingston Avenue was closed while police investigated and reopened shortly before 9:30 p.m.
