Family seeking justice after man shot and killed in Bertie County

BERTIE COUNTY, N.C. (WITN) – A homicide investigation is underway after authorities say a man was shot and killed at his home on Wednesday night southeast of Aulander.

Cathy Wilkins is trying to hold back her tears over the tragic loss of her grandson.

“I never tried to hurt nobody. I just want the Lord to visit him so that the person will be found and prosecuted for what they did to him,” says Wilkins.

According to the Bertie County Sheriff’s Office, at around 10:21 pm, they responded to reports of a person being shot in the 1500 block of Hexlena Road.

Deputies found 28-year-old Dashawn Boone dead from an apparent gunshot wound.

“He was a sweet person. He would do anything you asked him to do,” says Wilkins.

Wilkins says Boone wasn’t perfect but didn’t deserve to lose his life in cold blood.

She says he will never be forgotten and hopes justice is served.

“Dashwan, I love you. Grandma always will. You will always have a place in my heart and I’ll see you on the other side. I hope you made it in, I hope you did,” says Wilkins.

Boone leaves behind a three-year-old daughter and many family and friends.
