Family practice clinic closes after six months in Plymouth

PLYMOUTH, N.C. (WITN) – Some residents in the east are going to have to find another clinic to receive medical care as the manager and staff of that Plymouth clinic says they simply cannot afford to remain open.

O’Neal’s Family Practice in Plymouth is closing its doors after less than six months.

The facility under the direction of Family Nurse Practitioners Renea Price and Whitley Lawrence announced as of March 13th it would no longer see patients.

It all comes as a surprise for Gary Blount, who hopes he and his wife will be able to follow the providers to their next location.

“Hopefully she can find another practice somewhere close because she’s been good to us, me and my family. Hopefully, she can find a good place to go in the area where we don’t have to go far” says Blount.

Price and Lawrence opened the office eight weeks after Roanoke Clinics was forced to close following the bankruptcy of Martin General Hospital in 2023.

Now, it seems this clinic wasn’t financially viable.

“That’s really not anything I know much about because it’s not my personal business. I’m just the healthcare provider so living in a rural healthcare area of course you know it probably comes down to medical reimbursements, insurance of course accessibility to healthcare providers, increased inflation and prices and things with salaries,” says Price.

Manager Neal O’Neal says the clinic has received less than ten percent of its reimbursements from patients’ insurance companies including Medicare and Medicaid.

“Financially, it got to the point where we are still working to try to get reimbursed from the payers that we are credentialed with and the overhead costs of everything that is going on we had to make the decision to close,” says O’Neal.

The closure leaves patients, once again, wondering where to turn for the care they need.

O’Neal says the office saw anywhere between 150 and 200 patients each week.

The practice says patients have until roughly April 10th to transfer their medical records.
