Facebook Marketplace post leads to trailer theft arrests

LENOIR COUNTY, N.C. (WITN) – The Lenoir County Sheriff’s Office says two Kinston men were caught with a stolen trailer after trying to sell it on social media.

Lenoir County deputies say they arrested Michael Whaley, 36, and Shawn Alcock, 44, on multiple theft charges.

Investigators say deputies were called to a home on Highway 55 West on Friday after the owner of a trailer reported it stolen.

Officials say the victim found the stolen trailer on Facebook Marketplace two days later.

The trailer was returned. Officials say Whaley was arrested Monday night and given a secured bond. Meanwhile, officials say Alcock was arrested Tuesday night and is being held with no bond.

Both men are charged with felony larceny, conspiracy to commit felony larceny, felony possession of stolen goods, and conspiracy to obtain property by false pretenses.

Detectives say they found drugs on Alock during his arrest and when he arrived at the jail. He faces these additional drug charges: possession of methamphetamine, felony possession of Schedule I controlled substance, and possession of controlled substance on prison and/or jail premises. Alcock was also served three other orders for arrest.
