Event celebrates a day of theater and dance

GREENVILLE, N.C. (WITN) – Creative high school students in Pitt County had the chance to show off their talents and learn new skills during a 7th annual day celebrating the performing arts at East Carolina University.

Students from six different high schools in Pitt County filled the halls of ECU’s School of Theater and Dance to participate in a variety of workshops led by professional clinicians.

According to Julia George, a North Pitt High School theater arts teacher, the school had 60 theater students participating in four workshops.

“We have costume design, we have prop design, we have stage combat, and we have playwriting all through the faculty here at the School of Theater and Dance,” George said.

Thursday’s immersive experience gave the students the chance to explore boundless possibilities of expression through movement.

“It’s also a chance for them to take something other than what they are used to which is my class, so I like that it puts them out of their comfort zone and gives them some confidence as well,” North Pitt High School dance educator, Ashley Cartledge said.

According to a student at South Central High School, the skills she learns can be shared with her peers.

“So that when we have plays we can involve that into our plays instead of us figuring out how to do it we already have a few techniques of what to do,” Dekendra Harley said.
