AULANDER, N.C. (WITN) – An elderly woman was killed and her caregiver critically injured in a stabbing late last night in Aulander.
Sheriff Tyrone Ruffin said it happened just before midnight at a home on North Commerce Street.
The sheriff said 80-year-old Lan Rawls died in her home and her nurse aide, 62-year-old Rochelle Harrell, was airlifted to ECU Health Medical Center in Greenville. He said Harrell is in critical condition.
Ruffin said a car was stolen from the home and found in the woods about 3/4 miles from the murder scene. He said there were no signs of forced entry into the home and there is no motive yet for the stabbings.
The sheriff said at this point no one is in custody and that the SBI is helping with the investigation.
