ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. (WITN) – An elderly Rocky Mount couple remains in serious condition at ECU Health Medical Center, a day after they were attacked by a neighbor’s pit bull.
It happened in the 600 block of Nelson Street. When police arrived they saw the dog attacking Bobby Joyner, 82, and Annie Joyner, 78.
An officer was bitten in the thigh and ended up firing her weapon twice, striking the dog, according to a news release.
According to a family GoFundMe site, Annie Joyner had a foot amputated and the other one is in bad shape, while Bobby Joyner had surgery on his hands and arm.
Police say the dog’s owner, Julie Proctor got a hold of the animal until Rocky Mount Animal Control officers were able to take it into custody. The 62-year-old woman was charged with violating a city ordinance regarding the running / restraint of large animals.
Proctor told WITN that ‘Cosmo’, who weighed 100 pounds, was euthanized on Sunday.
Police said their investigation determined that the dog was running loose when the Joyners were attacked.
