Elder abuse awareness walk held in Kinston

Kinston, N.C. (WITN) – More than 200 seniors came together on Wednesday for Senior Appreciation Day in Kinston to educate themselves and participate in an elder abuse awareness walk during World Elder Abuse Awareness Day

The event included educational booths, line dances, and free food and gave participants the chance to learn more about senior-friendly resources available in the community.

For many seniors, it’s not just resources they seek but fun and exciting activities like line dancing. Lendell Wayne says the day gives older residents the chance to get out in the community.

“We don’t go home and sit on the front porch anymore, we’re still involved in our community, very, very active, and we try to exercise, eat healthy, and come and socialize with other seniors!”

During the event, information on how prevalent elder abuse is was shared and attendees learned how to be aware and notice signs of elder abuse.

Vendors set up services to provide information on things like health care and senior travel trips along with ways to stay active in the community as a senior citizen.

If interested in learning more, people can reach out to the Lenoir County Council on aging. There you can find more information on a variety of topics.
