Eight swim sites fail Swim Guide after Debby

Eight sites across Eastern Carolina have failed their Swim Guide test with others yet to be tested.

WASHINGTON, N.C. (WITN) – Eight sites across Eastern Carolina have failed their Swim Guide test with others yet to be tested.

Sound Rivers has reported that these sites have been tested and failed the Swim Guide fecal bacteria test:

  • Tar-Pamlico: Pamlico Plantation, Havens Gardens, and the Washington waterfront.
  • Neuse: Cowpen Landing in Vanceboro, Glenburnie Park in Newborn, Town of Bridgeton Park, and Slocum Creek in Havelock
  • Cotton Patch Landing on Blounts Creek

According to the release, elevated numbers of fecal bacteria in regularly swarm in water increase the risk of developing gastrointestinal illnesses and skin infections for pets and humans.

“Last week, we had Tropical Storm Debby to contend with, so we didn’t do any testing,” said Clay Barber, Sound Rivers’ program director. “All that heavy rain and stormwater runoff loaded up the waterways with bacteria, and this week’s results at some of the sites are still reflecting that.”

Sound Rivers says the following sites have yet to be tested: Maple Cypress in Grifton, Highway 11 boat ramp in Kinston and Spring Garden boat ramp near New Bern, Town Common and Port Terminal in Greenville, Dinah’s Landing at Goose Creek State Park, Bonner’s Point and Plum Point in Bath and Wright’s Creek in Belhaven.

Barber says when in doubt of the water’s quality, to keep your head above the water and to keep open wounds from any contact.
