ECU police promote use of LiveSafe app by staff and students

GREENVILLE, N.C. (WITN) – The ECU community was rocked by a shooting near the college on Wednesday. Now, campus police say they’re sending out a reminder that help is available with just the touch of a button.

Police at East Carolina University are urging students and staff to download the LiveSafe app on their smart devices.

Captain Chris Sutton says it provides a direct connection to the department and allows users to share tips and safety concerns through pictures, audio, video and text messages.

“So, I can tell you the most recent one that we got was a couple of weeks ago on a Wednesday where somebody had posted on Snapchat where they were asking the question, it was actually a school project but they were asking is it a bomb is it not a bomb,” says Sutton.

Once activated, the GPS monitoring feature on the app called “safewalk” lets friends and family track exact physical locations.

ECU student Noah Brown says he was not aware of the service and says he now plans to download it as soon as possible.

“I usually feel pretty safe around the campus, so I haven’t felt the need to use my phone or that type of thing, but with all the things that are happening nowadays, it’s good to have in your pocket ya know,” says Brown.

The LiveSafe app is also useful in situations like the one that occurred in Greenville on Wednesday, where an ECU staff member was shot in an unprovoked attack off campus.

Sutton says the program is monitored 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year.

“If you’re familiar with our blue light phones that we have across campus, some of the functionality that you have on the blue light phone which is a stationary object, you actually have at your fingertips and your telephone with the use of this app so download the app today,” says Sutton.

LiveSafe also provides everything from mental health support to maps that can point out safe locations in the event of an emergency.

ECU says so far, more than 6,000 students and staff have downloaded the LiveSafe app.
