ECU defeats top-seeded Tulsa in women’s quarterfinals

FORT WORTH, TEXAS (WITN) – A big upset this afternoon in the American Athletic Conference championships in Forth Worth.

East Carolina, ranked 9th, took down top-seeded Tulsa, 75-71.

This was the first quarterfinal of the 2024 American Women’s Basketball Championship at Dickies Arena

ECU (17-14) advance to the semifinals and will face the winner of the South Florida UTSA game tomorrow night.

The Pirates are the defending tournament champions. It is the second straight year that the No. 1 seed has fallen in the quarterfinals.

Tulsa (23-9) scored six of the first eight points of the game, but ECU went on a 9-0 run and never relinquished the lead.

The Pirates limited the Golden Hurricane to 35.8 percent shooting (24-of-67) while nearly shooting 50 percent themselves (49.1. percent – 27-of-55).

Danae McNeal led the Pirates with 29 points and 10 steals, while Amiya Joyner also recorded a double-double with 14 points and 14 rebounds.
