Duplin County Butterball plant has seen two deaths in just over a month

DUPLIN COUNTY, N.C. (WITN) – State labor officials say last week’s death at an Eastern Carolina poultry plant was the second worker fatality there in just over a month.

The North Carolina Department of Labor says a contract employee was killed last Thursday at the Butterball plant on Garner Chapel Road in Duplin County.

The electrical contractor was struck by a scissors lift that fell over, according to state officials.

Back on January 19th, the labor department began an investigation into a worker’s death at the same plant. In that case, state officials say that worker appears to have died from a heart attack, so the two deaths are unrelated.

The last worker death at the plant was in 2017 when an employee was electrocuted as he was removing a fluorescent light fixture. In that case, Butterball was given two citations and fined.

The state continues to investigate both recent employee deaths at Butterball.
