Duplin Co. man will use $1 million win for daughter’s college

RALEIGH, N.C. (WITN) – A Duplin County man can now take the next season of life easier after winning $1 million.

Michael Cherry, of Pink Hill, bought a $10 Million Spectacular ticket from Quinn’s General Store in Pink Hill on Tuesday, reports the North Carolina Education Lottery.

After finding out that he won $1 million, he breathes a sigh of relief that he doesn’t have to worry about his daughter’s college fund anymore.

“When she goes to college, she won’t have to worry about student aid or nothing,” he said. “When she graduates, she will be debt-free.”

He decided to take home his winnings as a lump sum. After federal and state taxes, he took $429,014.

“I know everything is going to be fine now,” he said. “It is a relief.”

Cherry plans on using some of the funds toward a family trip to Jamaica in celebration, paying off their cars, and saving the rest.
