Duplin Co. man chooses lump sum over chance for $25,000 a year for life

RALEIGH, N.C. (WITN) – A Beulaville man tried his luck $2 ticket, won, but chose a lump sum over the lifetime prize.

The North Carolina Education Lottery says Harold Eubanks won the first prize in a Lucky for Life drawing last Thursday afternoon. The grand prize is getting $25,000 a year for the rest of your life, which has an odds of 1 in 1.8 million.

Eubanks had the option of that or a $390,000 lump sum. The lottery says he chose the lump sum and took home $278,853 after state and federal taxes.

The lottery said he bought his lucky ticket at the 365 Stores LLC shop on North Jackson Street in Beulaville.
