Driver of speeding SUV facing multiple drug trafficking charges

PASQUOTANK COUNTY, N.C. (WITN) – A speeding SUV has landed an Elizabeth City man behind bars on multiple trafficking charges.

Pasquotank County deputies stopped the SUV Sunday on U.S. 17.

Before Al Ortiz stopped, deputies say they noticed him throwing an object out of the window.

K9 Omar alerted deputies to drugs, and they were able to seize a quantity of fentanyl from the vehicle.

The 47-year-old Ortiz is suspected of supplying fentanyl from New York to Elizabeth City and the surrounding areas, deputies say.

Ortiz is charged with trafficking fentanyl by transportation, trafficking fentanyl by possession, trafficking fentanyl by manufacturing, possession with intent to sell/deliver Schedule II controlled substance, maintaining a vehicle to store a controlled substance, as well as speeding and littering charges.

The man was jailed on a $1 million secured bond.
