Driver charged after Pitt County explosive materials spill

PITT COUNTY, N.C. (WITN) – The driver of a tanker truck carrying explosive materials that flipped over Friday has been charged.

Five homes were evacuated and Highway 222 outside of Fountain was closed for most of the day after the 7:00 a.m. crash.

Troopers say William Hernan, of Clinton, was charged with careless and reckless driving.

They say he was traveling east when he lost control of his truck, overturned, and spilled the chemicals he was hauling.

The 31-year-old Hernan was taken to ECU Health Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries.

The 18-wheeler was carrying ammonium nitrate, chemicals used in explosions at sites like rock quarries. Pitt County Emergency Services says each chemical was separated within the truck.

The truck was uprighted and a company was brought in to clean up the spill.
