NEWBERN N.C. (WITN) – An event called Giving Tuesday happened at Union Point Park on Tuesday. The event featured an opening ceremony at 10 a.m. on the center stage.
Giving Tuesday will feature a non-profit information fair, donation walk and drive-thru, live food vendors and a live concert by country music artist Bryan Mayer.
Forty of the more than 400 nonprofits in New Bern participated in a drive-thru donation event called New Bern Give 3, where the community gives back to some of their most favorite charitable organizations.
Organizers say this is especially important during nationwide supply shortages.
“You know if you’ve been to the store to buy a gallon of milk, it costs a lot more. A lot of these nonprofits have been serving for years. I’ve been involved in it. And they serve and they serve and they serve and that’s what Giving Tuesday is all about,” Tharesa Lee, co-leader of the event said.
One of the many nonprofits that were in attendance was The Filling Station.
Its mission is to assist the community with unmet needs in the areas of nutrition and education.
Tuesday morning, an anonymous person donated $1,000 to the nonprofit’s cause.
Guests were encouraged to make charitable contributions to support their favorite organizations.
The event ended on Tuesday, but Lee reminded everyone that most non-profits in New Bern have a way for people to donate online.
