DOT says work almost complete on troubled Chocowinity bridge

BEAUFORT COUNTY, N.C. (WITN) – Barrels and cones are finally gone from a much-delayed bridge project here in Eastern Carolina.

The Department of Transportation says all work on the new U.S. 17 Business bridge is complete, except for permanent pavement markings.

Crews this morning were on the bridge putting down temporary markings on the bridge that connects Chocowinity with Washington.

Work on the new bridge began back in 2021, but when it was completed, it failed a safety inspection after the DOT found the concrete wearing surface and thickness were not up to specifications.

A subcontractor had to be brought in to apply an overlay of concrete on the bridge deck.

Final work was delayed until last month when the DOT said materials to do the job were finally available.

Originally the bridge was supposed to open by Memorial Day weekend of last year.

The DOT says the extra cost will be at the expense of the contractor, and they expect final pavement markings to be laid down in the next couple of weeks as the weather warms up.
