GREENVILLE, N.C. (WITN) – The state has filed more than a hundred charges against two men with connections to several Eastern Carolina independent auto dealers.
The DMV brought the charges against Saher Ashkar and Mohamad Ashkar. The two men are both charged with 17 counts of odometer fraud, title fraud, and obtaining property by false pretense.
The DMV says the dealerships involved were Cars on Tenth in Greenville, along with Carolina Auto Locators and Washington Imports in Washington.
State records show Mohamad Ashkar owns Cars on Tenth.
The state says the investigation centered on people rolling back odometers in several vehicles from March 2021 through last June.
Seventeen vehicles were involved, with the DMV saying 2.4 million miles were rolled back, which resulted in nearly $250,000 in total losses to victims.
The DMV says it is working on civil actions to take the license of Cars on Tenth and close that dealership, while the two Washington dealerships are already shut down.
