DHHS: 43 new flu deaths, total rises to 95

RALEIGH, N.C. (WITN) РThe North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services reported 43 new flu-related deaths on Wednesday, bringing the state’s flu death toll to 95, seven of whom are children, three of them under the age of five.

The new numbers showing a sharp increase came after the CDC reported that vaccinations for the flu this season were the lowest in the last five years.

Although the death rate did spike dramatically, DHHS also reported that hospitalizations dropped significantly over the last week.

Last flu season, there were 196 flu-related deaths, including three children, according to DHHS.
