Deputy rolls patrol vehicle responding to officer needing assistance call

ONSLOW COUNTY, N.C. (WITN) – An Onslow County deputy sheriff is expected to make a full recovery after crashing his patrol vehicle early Sunday.

Sheriff Chris Thomas said Deputy David West, Jr. was responding to an assistance call from another officer when he hydroplaned on the highway.

The crash happened around 3:00 a.m. on Highway 258 near Pony Farm Road.

The sheriff says West’s cruiser went off the road and overturned. West was treated at Naval Medical Center Camp Lejeune, suffering a broken arm and bruises.

The Highway Patrol says charges are not expected to be brought against the deputy.
