Deputies use K9 and drone to nab suspect hiding in the woods

CRAVEN COUNTY, N.C. (WITN) -Deputies in one Eastern Carolina county say they caught a man on the run with the help of a K9 and a drone.

Michael Newby was arrested Tuesday on charges of assault on a government official, four counts of resisting a public officer, carrying a concealed weapon, and two counts of felony probation violation.

Craven County deputies say they had probation violation warrants for Newby. When they approached his home on Keener Avenue, he escaped through a rear window and ran into the woods.

Deputies say they used a drone with thermal imaging to search for Newby, who was found hiding behind a building off Stacy Lane.

When one deputy spotted the Newby, he used his K9 to detain Newby. Deputies say that when they approached Newby, he pulled a knife and threatened to stab the deputies and himself.

Using a Taser, the deputies took Newby into custody.

Newby was given a $7,500 bond on the new charges and a $20,000 bond for the probation violations.
