DEPUTIES: man walking in Beaufort County woods finds human skeleton

BEAUFORT COUNTY, N.C. (WITN) – A man taking a walk through the woods in Beaufort County made a grisly discovery this weekend.

Roughly 400 feet into the woods, the man stumbled across what deputies say is a full human skeleton.

“It was pretty much the entire body of skeletal remains,” Beaufort County Sheriff Scott Hammonds.

The discovery was made on Sunday in some woods off of River Road between Pamlico Village and Asbury Church Road. Deputies used a drone as a guide to get to where the remains were found, a place that Hammonds thinks the remains have been for quite some time.

“It had been there enough time where a change in seasons had allowed the leaves and pine straw to partially cover it,” Hammonds said.

Hammonds said that deputies had also found clothing nearby, and while deputies have not connected the clothes to the skeleton yet, Hammonds did say that they suspect they are related.

When asked about the identification process, Hammonds says that missing persons files are where deputies are starting first.

“We’re looking back at some records through the years,” Hammonds said. “Nothing recent has been reported of missing people, though there have been missing people reports made several years ago.”
