DEPUTIES: Man confesses to Bertie County rape

BERTIE COUNTY, N.C. (WITN) – An Eastern Carolina man is facing charges after deputies said he raped a woman.

The Bertie County Sheriff’s Office said that Alqwan Hayes, 33, of Windsor, was arrested Wednesday and charged with first degree forcible rape, first degree forcible sex offense, and kidnapping.

Deputies said that their investigation began back on February 3rd when they and EMS were dispatched to Highway 42 in Colerain for a sexual assault. There they spoke with the alleged victim and witnesses before the victim was taken to ECU Health Roanoke-Chowan Hospital in Ahoskie.

Deputies investigated over the next several weeks before obtaining warrants against Hayes.

Deputies said that Hayes was interviewed before being processed and said that he confessed to the crime.

Hayes was taken to the Bertie-Martin Regional Jail where he’s being held without bond.
