HALIFAX COUNTY, N.C. (WITN) – A mother is in critical condition and her son is okay after the two were found last night in one Eastern Carolina county.

Halifax County deputies say they were called to Branch Avenue and Key Street just outside of Roanoke Rapids for reports of gunfire around 9:00 p.m.

In a field, they found a vehicle with a 41-year-old woman who had been shot in the upper torso area, and her 10-year-old son.

The victim remains in critical condition at a trauma center while the child is with family members. a news release says.

Deputies have not released any information on what led up to the woman being shot.
